Thefreshprinceoffits: Flannel? Plaid? Tartan? Finally, the model is elevated with Converse platform sneakers, adding height and attitude to the 10/10 fit. It’s not overly baggy, and the silhouette is complemented by the relatively fitted top. We’ve covered turtlenecks and the oversized trend before the model pulls this look off really well. The upper fit is tucked into flared, baggy trousers. The tee reads “Parental Advisory”, a reference to the Parental Advisory label introduced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1985 to alert parents of material potentially unsuitable for children. Our final model is wearing a stylish and sassy graphic tee over a bold ribbed turtleneck. You can cop some great chokers and earrings on Blue Nile, and similar dresses can be found on Boohoo and ASOS. I’ll be discussing the polka dot trend in greater detail in another post. The spaghetti string, asymmetrical dress, worn over a simple crewneck tee with cuffed sleeves, is patterned with brilliant polka dots of various sizes and colours. The choker adds some 90s edge to the look, and contrasts the more bubbly outfit. She’s also wearing the sophisticated, vogue, single dangling earring look, worn by Prince and models from Vetements and Saint Laurent. Her eyebrows are bold and her lips are popping. Our next model wears her bold makeup with striking attitude. Look out for Tommy Hilfiger tops and other modern menswear heritage brands like Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. He’s got a patchwork button up shirt, likely inspired by the trend popularized by Tommy Hilfiger and his ilk. This dude’s wearing a quintessential 90s look. I commissioned Soraya to doodle some people decked out in highly 90s clothing for my analysis. This is a collaboration, so be sure to check out her work, she’s extremely talented. I’ll be briefly interrupting the rest of the series on patterns to share and analyze some doodles from on Instagram. Will Smith famously wore his school uniform jacket inside out in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the early 90s, revealing a paisley-pattern that truly made him stand out. After being iconized in rock & roll history, Prince paid tribute to the design and even had a song called “Paisley Park” in 1985. The psychedelic nature of the design made it popular amongst hippies, and the pattern was made mainstream thanks in part to The Beatles in the 1960s. The weavers in the town of Paisley, Scotland produced a very trendy paisley shawl for women, which was popular in the 1800s. In the Safavid, Qajar, and Pahlavi dynasties of the 1500s to the 1700s, the pattern was used to decorate the royal regalia, crowns, and court garments, as well as textiles used by the general population. Men’s ties are a common piece of clothing that sport the design. The symbol is popular in jewellery and carpets but is also used in clothing. As usual, a piece of Asian culture was appropriated and hijacked by Europeans. After spreading to Europe, the Scottish town of Paisley quickly became a major center for its manufacturing. The buta seems to resemble a stylized floral spray, fused with a cypress tree: a Zoroastrian symbol of life and eternity. The motif originated from Persia and is common in Turkey, India, Azerbaijan, and other Central Asian countries. The paisley pattern is made up of buta, an almond or pine cone-shaped motif in ornament with a sharp-curved upper end. The paisley pattern has a surprising history, as it was inspired by the oldest religion in the world. Go follow for art, poetry, fashion, and blogging.
